DESCRIPTION:James Cameron’s Titanic told the invented story of the Heart of the Ocean–a fictional blue diamond necklace lost tragically in the ship’s famous sinking. But what about the real treasures that were lost when the Titanic sank? \nFor over a century\, the world has been intrigued by the story of the Titanic. When tragedy struck on April 14\, 1912\, in addition to the incredible loss of life\, a nearly incalculable amount of goods plummeted into the ocean\, never to be seen again. This lecture takes a closer look at and tells the stories of some of the more interesting and valuable treasures lost on that fateful night. \nMallory Mortillaro is an art historian and educator. She has ten years of teaching experience and has worked on various art research projects for museums and organizations in the New York metropolitan area. She studied at Drew University. DESCRIPTION:The Bacon Free Library is thrilled to welcome back former Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian extraordinaire Fran Daneault to exhibit her spectacular collection of quilts. Along with raising her two sons in Natick and working at the Bacon\, Fran has also spent years perfecting her crafting skills. She applies the same energy\, creativity\, joy\, and humor to her artistic works that she brought in working with children and families at the BFL\, where she frequently wore and gifted some of her handmade creations. \nA longtime resident of Natick\, Fran and her husband recently relocated to New Hampshire\, where Fran can be found walking on the beach\, volunteering in her local library\, and quilting up a storm. \nFran’s quilts will be on display at the BFL from September 19th – October 30th.  Join us at this reception to view the quilts and visit with Fran. \n  \nFrom Fran: \n \nI am a scrappy\, wonky\, modern\, art quilter who sometimes makes traditional quilts. \nI like learning in classes and workshops but have trouble sticking to a pattern. \nFor fabric\, I collect randomly spaced dots\, paisleys\, loudly busy prints and happy colors. I think\, perhaps wrongly\, that they all go together. \nI own way too much fabric but still feel the need to give orphaned fabrics a home. \nI hope you enjoy this collection of quilts.

DESCRIPTION:For adults who want to learn about floral design\, this class at the Bacon Free Library will cover the basics of design as well as sustainable mechanics and floral conditioning.  We will provide you with a supermarket bouquet and mason jar vase. Then\, you can select and share items from the flower table for greens\, filler flowers\, focal flowers\, and branches. Feel free to bring favorite flowers or greens from your garden if you want to include them in your design (this is optional as there will be enough flowers for the class.)  You will take home your finished arrangement in a box.\n\n\nWe will have a variety of scissors and hand clippers for your use. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Bacon Free Library from May 21st to June 3rd to enjoy Babsje’s stunning photography collection\, Great Blue Herons: A Study of Patience and Grace. \nBabsje was a local photographer who focused her lens on the Great Blue Herons in and around Lake Cochituate and on the Charles\, including at the dam in South Natick. She spent many very happy days floating in her kayak\, and the herons became so accustomed to her quiet presence that she was able to beautifully document their private grandeur for all to experience. \n“Alas\, my days of photographing the magnificent Great Blue Herons from the cockpit of my kayak floating on the lake have come to an end.” – Posted by Babsje on December 20\, 2023\, shortly before her death in January. babsjeheron.wordpress.com. \nShe is greatly missed. \n  \nPhotographs are available for purchase upon request. In this workshop at the Bacon Free Library\, learn the history of Zentangle\, the basic steps of the method\, and the tools used. Through step-by-step instructions\, you will be immersed in creating an original Zentangle tile.\n \nNo artistic talent or experience is required. SUMMARY:Ongoing Art Display at the BFL – Carol Keefe & Bobby Reeve
DESCRIPTION:Visit the BFL to enjoy the current\, nature-themed exhibit created by two local artists. This exhibit pairs the lush ocean landscapes of Carol Keefe with the true-to-life bird sculptures of Bobby Reeve.  This art will be displayed through March 27th. \n  \nCarol Keefe\nCarol Keefe is a long-term artist member of the Artist Association of Nantucket (AAN)\, and is represented at their gallery.  She has had several Featured Artist shows there and won Best of Show in the AAN Gallery in 2007.  In 2014\, Carol was honored with the 2014 Painting Award from the AAN.  Carol has studied at both the Decordova and Danforth Museum Schools\, as well as with Sherre Wilson Ray and Sandra Flavin.   Carol’s work is displayed at Brown Basket Gallery on South Wharf\, the Nantucket Looms\, The Sherborn Inn\, Natick Artist Open Studios\, and numerous private collections\, as well as in her home studio near Cisco Beach and South Natick. \nCarol’s art\, in her own words: \nI am inspired by the ever-changing light and color at the horizon. My medium of choice is oil on board or canvas. My paintings are often large\, horizontal pieces emphasizing the meeting of sky and sea on Nantucket Island. My goal is to capture the feelings of summer on our coast. \n  \nBobby Reeve\nFor over 50 years\, Bobby Reeve has been a woodworker in New Hampshire and Massachusetts doing house carpentry and running a one-man shop for furniture making and bird carvings. Both his parents were watercolorists and he started painting with their mentor\, Harold Stevenson\, many years ago. \nBobby’s art\, in his own words: \nI always wanted to fly\, and I don’t mean in a plane! Somehow this explains my love of birds — their flight\, colors\, shapes\, songs\, and behaviors. I love the idea of a “bird’s eye view” and carving and sculpting almost get me there.

DESCRIPTION:The Town of Natick and Natick Center Cultural District (NCCD) announce a CALL FOR ARTISTS seeking proposals for Traffic Calming and Stormwater Education Public Art (TCSEPA) projects at several intersections in the NCCD\, along with designs for decals on sidewalks for a total stipend of $5\,000. Details of the Project – Traffic Calming Stormwater Education Public Art List and MAP of the project – TCSEPA Map \nSubmissions must be in by February 13th\, 2024. \nDo you still have questions?
