SUMMARY:Great Blue Herons: A Study of Patience and Grace
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Bacon Free Library from May 21st to June 3rd to enjoy Babsje’s stunning photography collection\, Great Blue Herons: A Study of Patience and Grace. \nBabsje was a local photographer who focused her lens on the Great Blue Herons in and around Lake Cochituate and on the Charles\, including at the dam in South Natick. She spent many very happy days floating in her kayak\, and the herons became so accustomed to her quiet presence that she was able to beautifully document their private grandeur for all to experience. \n“Alas\, my days of photographing the magnificent Great Blue Herons from the cockpit of my kayak floating on the lake have come to an end.” – Posted by Babsje on December 20\, 2023\, shortly before her death in January. babsjeheron.wordpress.com. \nShe is greatly missed. \n  \nPhotographs are available for purchase upon request. All proceeds from sales will be donated to Massachusetts Audubon Society.

SUMMARY:Crankie Music Program
DESCRIPTION:The Magid Ensemble presents Shterna and the Lost Voice\, a musical crankie Yiddish folktale. This new folktale by A.C. Weaver is inspired by mythical stories of Elyahu Hanovi and traditional Yiddish folklore. Shterna and the Lost Voice follows a young woman’s quest from the realms of the dead to the celestial gardens of the immortal – all to restore her friend’s lost voice. Shterna’s epic adventure is accompanied by live original klezmer music while the narrative unfolds through a papercut crankie. This dynamic performance is geared towards audiences of all ages! \n\n\n\nWhat is a crankie? A crankie is a long scroll wound onto two spools that illustrates a story as it unwinds. Kiah Raymond’s original crankie incorporates shadow puppetry inspired by Jewish papercut art. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nShterna and the Lost Voice is presented by The Magid Ensemble (magid\, meaning “storyteller” in Yiddish) –\na new collaboration featuring award-winning klezmer musicians and composers Mattias Kaufmann\, Raffi\nBoden\, and Rachel Leader\, Yiddishist storyteller A. C. Weaver\, and visual artist Kiah Raymond. \n\nProduction by member of Mamaliga Klezmer Band. (Mamaligaband.com)\nThis event is generously sponsored by Combined Jewish Philanthropies\, and the Natick Local Cultural\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:Ongoing Art Display at the BFL – Carol Keefe & Bobby Reeve
DESCRIPTION:Visit the BFL to enjoy the current\, nature-themed exhibit created by two local artists. This exhibit pairs the lush ocean landscapes of Carol Keefe with the true-to-life bird sculptures of Bobby Reeve.  This art will be displayed through March 27th. \n  \nCarol Keefe\nCarol Keefe is a long-term artist member of the Artist Association of Nantucket (AAN)\, and is represented at their gallery.  She has had several Featured Artist shows there and won Best of Show in the AAN Gallery in 2007.  In 2014\, Carol was honored with the 2014 Painting Award from the AAN.  Carol has studied at both the Decordova and Danforth Museum Schools\, as well as with Sherre Wilson Ray and Sandra Flavin.   Carol’s work is displayed at Brown Basket Gallery on South Wharf\, the Nantucket Looms\, The Sherborn Inn\, Natick Artist Open Studios\, and numerous private collections\, as well as in her home studio near Cisco Beach and South Natick. \nCarol’s art\, in her own words: \nI am inspired by the ever-changing light and color at the horizon. My medium of choice is oil on board or canvas. My paintings are often large\, horizontal pieces emphasizing the meeting of sky and sea on Nantucket Island. My goal is to capture the feelings of summer on our coast. \n  \nBobby Reeve\nFor over 50 years\, Bobby Reeve has been a woodworker in New Hampshire and Massachusetts doing house carpentry and running a one-man shop for furniture making and bird carvings. Both his parents were watercolorists and he started painting with their mentor\, Harold Stevenson\, many years ago. \nBobby’s art\, in his own words: \nI always wanted to fly\, and I don’t mean in a plane! Somehow this explains my love of birds — their flight\, colors\, shapes\, songs\, and behaviors. I love the idea of a “bird’s eye view” and carving and sculpting almost get me there.

SUMMARY:Mass Audubon’s The Nature of Winter with Doug Lowry (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The nature of Massachusetts is filled with seasonal mysteries waiting to be uncovered. Have you ever wondered which animal left tracks in the snow? What happens to pond animals under a layer of ice? Or what trees are lining the trails on your winter walks? This online program hosted by the Bacon Free Library will introduce the seasonal dynamics of nature in winter\, and provide ideas and resources for observing\, appreciating\, and supporting wildlife near home this winter. \nDoug Lowry is the Senior Teacher/Naturalist for Mass Audubon’s South East Region\, Senior Field Instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School\, and a Master Educator for the Leave No Trace program. He has spent over 3\,000 days on wilderness expeditions and is a grateful student of life-long bird study.\n\nThis program will be held over Zoom. Please register on the Bacon Free Library website to receive the program link. \nImage by Jörg Vieli from Pixabay
