SUMMARY:Atlanta Rhythm Section
DESCRIPTION:The Atlanta Rhythm Section… ARS… In the annals of rock and roll\, where do they fit? They put out 15 albums of excellent original material\, and consistently put on entertaining live shows-both of which helped establish a broad if not huge fan base. They had some big hits and have been a major player in the Southern Rock scene. But is that the whole story? In some circles\, maybe. But for those who’ve really gotten to know their music over the years\, there’s a lot more to the story. \nYou know Atlanta Rhythm Section from the hits So Into You\, I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight\, Champagne Jam\, Imaginary Lover\, and their session work on the original recording of Spooky made famous by the Classics IV\, and later re-recorded by ARS. \nARS was paired with contemporaries Lynyrd Skynyrd as the successors to the Allman Brothers – carrying the mantle of “Southern Rock” in the late 70s. Based in Atlanta\, Georgia\, it may have made sense at the time. But performing songs that were more musically diverse and having hits that had a softer\, pop sound\, the “Southern Rock” label was a mixed blessing and many of their unique musical accomplishments became lost in a genre that has lived on to this day-but never really fit ARS. \nVisit: atlantarhythmsection.com

SUMMARY:BOTH SIDES NOW: The Music of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen
DESCRIPTION:“Two singer-songwriters sit on the edge of a cliff…” With these words\, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now – a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers\, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Created by\, and starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz\, the cabaret-style performance traverses decades alongside songs such as A Case of You\, Hallelujah\, Big Yellow Taxi\, Suzanne\, and many more. Both Sides Now is at once a piece of the 60s and 70s\, and of right now — offering us a story about the messiness of being human\, of lives persistently lived at the edge of growth\, and of finding the courage to turn toward one another\, again and again. \nRobbie Schaefer\nRobbie is a rabbi\, singer-songwriter\, and theatre/film artist. The guitarist and songwriter for the indie-folk band Eddie From Ohio has several solo releases as well\, including the 2023 single Under the Sun. \nDanielle Wertz\nDanielle is a storyteller\, collaborator\, jazz musician\, composer and arranger. Described as\, “untarnished by the politics of music” (Jazz Music Archives) and “a masterful ballad interpreter” (New York City Jazz Record) she has rapidly gained national acclaim. \nVisit: bothsidesnowshow.com

SUMMARY:Robin Baratz Oil Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Robin Baratz creates oil paintings that depict her instinctive connection to natural land and water and to the people. She motors and sails to reach and capture countrysides\, harbors\, and cityscapes of the United States\, Ireland\, Scotland\, Europe\, and Canada on her canvas.  But\, no matter what the actual locales\, the scenes have broad appeal\, reminding us of people and places we remember fondly. \nCome to the Bacon Free Library to view her work\, which will be on display from August 28th through October 9th.  You can also enjoy this collection of oil paintings at The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) during the month of November. \n

SUMMARY:Superman
DESCRIPTION:“James Gunn’s new ‘Superman’ film earns a glowing five-star review\, revitalizing the iconic character by embracing vulnerability\, humor\, and hopeful optimism.” – Tom Shone\, Film Critic – The Times (UK) \nSuperman\, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen\, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style\, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action\, humor and heart\, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind. \nWhen Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad\, his actions are questioned\, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged companion\, Krypto\, be able to help him before it’s too late? \nIn 2022\, James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed as co-CEOs of DC Studios\, a newly formed division within Warner Bros. Discovery. This is part of a larger overhaul of the DC movie and TV franchises\, intended to create a more unified\, cohesive cinematic universe\, similar to what Marvel Studios has done with the MCU. The shift to DC Studios is a way to reset the franchise under a more strategic and creative direction\, with a focus on interconnected storytelling. \nDirector: James Gunn\nCast: David Corenswet\, Rachel Brosnahan\, Nicholas Hoult\nRating: PG-13\nRuntime: 2 hours 9 mins\nReleased: July 11\, 2025\nFormat: DCP\nAudio: 7.1 Surround\nAccessibility: Z-Screen subtitles\, Audio Description (headphones)\, Assisted Listening (headphones) \nVisit: superman.com \nSREENINGS: \nWednesday\, September 3\, 2025 | 2:00pm\nWednesday\, September 3\, 2025 | 7:30pm\nThursday\, September 4\, 2025 | 7:30pm\nSaturday\, September 6\, 2025 | 2:00pm\nSunday\, September 7\, 2025 | 4:00pm

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL: George Boutwell – The Most Consequential American Political Figure You’ve Never Heard Of
DESCRIPTION:Listen in as historian Jeffrey S. Boutwell discusses his new biography\, Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy. \nGeorge S. Boutwell is the most consequential American political figure you’ve probably never heard of.  For seven decades\, George Boutwell sought to “redeem America’s promise” through racial equality\, economic equity\, and the humane use of American power abroad.  During his career from 1839 to 1905\, he was Governor of Massachusetts\, served in the U.S. House and Senate\, was Treasury Secretary for Ulysses Grant\, and Commissioner of Internal Revenue for Abraham Lincoln\, he also helped create the Republican Party in the 1850s\, and challenged the efforts of Presidents McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt to annex the Philippines in 1900 following the Spanish-American war.  Boutwell was instrumental in framing the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments\, initiating the impeachment of Andrew Johnson\, and investigating white vigilante violence against blacks in Mississippi in the 1870s. \nThis virtual program will be held in collaboration with the Bacon Free Library and the Ashland Public Library.  It is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library. \nPlease register here for the Zoom link.
