Settled by Irish monks around 600 AD\, colonized by Vikings in the ninth century\, and Christianized around 1000\, the Faroe Islands are now an autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark. Formed by volcanic activity and reshaped by ice age glaciers\, mountains rise steeply and sharply from the sea. Small villages in the rounded valleys of the coastline appear below you as you round a bend on a narrow road or emerge from one of the numerous tunnels that now connect almost all of the islands and some of the harder to reach villages. DESCRIPTION:Winter sowing is a simple way to start seeds outdoors during the wintertime. All you need is a milk jug\, potting soil\, seeds\, and a sunny\, protected location. Once you’ve sown your seeds\, you can practically forget about them until it is time to transplant the seedlings into your spring garden bed. \nAt this in-person workshop at the Bacon Free Library\, you’ll learn all about this process while creating your own winter sowing jug. \nAll supplies will be provided including locally harvested native seeds. \nRegistration is required. \nThis program will also be presented at the Natick Community Center on  January 6th at 10:00 am which is fully accessible.

DESCRIPTION:In this program\, author Julie Dobrow will discuss her new book\, Love and Loss After Wounded Knee: A Biography of an Extraordinary Interracial Marriage. Like most star-crossed lovers\, they came from vastly different worlds. Elaine Goodale\, a white woman who grew up on a farm in the remotest part of the Berkshires\, was a poet\, writer and teacher who’d come to the Dakota Territory in 1884 to teach Native American children. Ohíye S’a\, or Charles Alexander Eastman\, was a Santee Sioux\, born in Minnesota and one of the only Native Americans educated at Dartmouth College and Boston University Medical School. He’d come to Pine Ridge as a reservation physician. Elaine and Charles improbably met in December 1890\, and more surprisingly\, fell in love. DESCRIPTION:Among the 10 gardens we’ll visit in this virtual tour are three on Mount Desert Island\, Maine\, each very different from each other\, but all associated with the notable landscape architect Beatrix Farrand. Heading south\, we’ll tour Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and then make a quick stop at a flower-filled field in Brunswick\, Maine. We’ll visit Weir Farm in Connecticut\, a National Historic Site\, and Buttrick Gardens in Concord\, Massachusetts\, which is part of the Minuteman National Historic Park. Adding to the roster of gardens in this presentation is Enders Island in Mystic\, Connecticut. DESCRIPTION:“It’s a highway\, filled with deep\, exotic colors and beautiful delicate things as well as the perils that come from moving so fast\,” says Dar Williams\, describing modern life. On her 13th album\, Hummingbird Highway\, out September 12 on Righteous Babe Records\, Williams celebrates the colors she glimpses from her vantage as a touring musician. “I was a kid from the suburbs who listened when her hippie teachers said to get out in the world\,” Williams muses. Hummingbird Highway is the latest chapter in a richly unfolding story. Drawing on her experience as a playwright\, Williams populates her latest album with nuanced characters that come alive in the space of a few minutes. \nOn the title track\, Williams sings from the perspective of a child speaking to her peripatetic and sometimes struggling parent. Blooming columbines\, china blue teapots\, and cinnamon bark number among the “treasures” in her life\, despite the “pirates” that she imagines populating her worldly parent’s life. “The pirates can be all sorts of things living inside and outside your head. The child\, for better or worse\, knows that there is joy\, unpredictability\, and instability on the home front. She’s rooting for the joy.” \nLongtime listeners know that Williams and her music are always up for those kinds of conversations that glimpse the brightest colors\, woven into the larger context of time. “As I’ve gotten older\, I feel more comfortable holding a lot of different threads in my hand to create more complicated patterns. Time has given me a better ability to hold a bunch of colors and temperaments and see what happens\, where they become interesting new stories and also where I need to stop and untangle the themes and characters. It’s daunting\, and I’ve learned that\, you know\, daunting is fine\, just keep going.” \nThe Nields will be perfoming alongside Williams at this show. The Nields are a folk-rock band from Massachusetts. They are delighted to announce the release of their much-anticipated twenty-first album\, Circle of Days. An homage to the calendar––and really\, time itself––this collection of songs is a testament to the band’s enduring creativity and unwavering commitment to their craft. During the pandemic\, Nerissa and Katryna Nields\, the band’s frontwomen\, took a daily walk with their beloved dogs\, Greta and Hudson. The destination was a nearby lake\, where Katryna would take a daily photo. DESCRIPTION:Storm Large is musician\, actor\, playwright\, author\, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova\, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale\, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Storm appeared on the 2021 season of America’s Got Talent. \nOn the 10th anniversary of its premiere\, Storm reprised her one-woman autobiographical musical memoir Crazy Enough at La Jolla Music Society and Portland Center Stage in 2019.
